Equatorial Energia is a company in the electric sector, focused on distribution, generation, transmission, and commercialization of electric energy. In addition to these services, the company also operates in the telecommunications area, headquartered in Brasília. For each segment, Equatorial has subsidiaries.

In the case of distribution, the company operates through Equatorial Maranhão, Equatorial Pará, Equatorial Alagoas, and Equatorial Piauí. For transmission, the holding has 8 projects in pre-operational stage, in addition to Intesa – an operations line that crosses the states of Goiás and Tocantins.
For electric energy generation, Equatorial operates through the Geramar Thermoelectric Plant. Commercialization is done through Sol Energias and, furthermore, the company operates in the services area, through the 55 solutions it has.
The Equatorial Maranhão, has an operating area of 332 thousand km², representing 3.9% of Brazilian territory. This means that, in terms of concession area, the company is the second largest energy distributor in the country. In total, there are more than 2.4 million customers, where the company serves about 7 million inhabitants.

In Pará, Equatorial has controlled the Equatorial Pará, since 2012. The company is the only distribution concessionaire in the state, with an operating area of 1,248 thousand km². In numbers, the area represents about 14.7% of Brazilian territory. Additionally, the Pará company has 2.6 million customers and serves about 8.2 million inhabitants.
The Equatorial Piauí was acquired by Equatorial Energia in 2018 and, since then, the distributor covers the entire state regarding electric energy. With a concession area of 251 km², the company has 1.2 million consumers.
As part of its product portfolio, Equatorial Energia also operates in the generation segment through the Geramar, where the company holds 25% of the share control. Geramar, in general, is responsible for implementing and operating the thermoelectric plants of Nova Olinda and Tocantinópolis, both in Maranhão.

The history of Equatorial Energia began in 1999, when the company was still known as Brisk Participações S.A. Initially, the Company was founded with the aim of participating in privatization auctions, especially for CEMAR, the Maranhão Energy Company.

Thus, the real emergence of Equatorial Energia occurred in 2004, when Equatorial Maranhão – formerly CEMAR – faced financial problems.
Then, the path found by the company was to negotiate with creditors a restructuring plan for the Company. As a result, GP Investimentos acquired control of the company and implemented the restructuring plan in the same year, in 2004.
In 2006, the company went public, meaning it became listed on the Brazilian stock exchange. A year later, in 2007, Equatorial Energia began to develop a restructuring plan based on 3 stages. The first of these was related to the transaction between PCP Latin America Power Fund Ltd. and GP Investimentos.
After the first stage, completed before 2008, the company initiated the second stage of the restructuring plan. Thus, PCP Energia Participações S.A. was incorporated by Equatorial Energia, where the company came to hold a 13% stake in Light S.A. The incorporation was approved in February 2008, in an Extraordinary Assembly.

In 2012, Equatorial Energia acquired Equatorial Pará, through a purchase and sale agreement with the company's controllers. In the same year, the Company increased its capital (follow up) after completing the service operation. As a result, the company's shares were priced at R$ 16.00, totaling R$ 1.1 billion in net resources.
In 2015, Squadra Investimentos became the largest shareholder of Equatorial Energia, with 15% of the capital. In the same year, the Company put 100% of its shares into circulation in the stock market.
The following year, in 2016, Equatorial Energia entered the transmission segment. The expansion of the product portfolio came through the purchase of 8 transmission line lots, made after winning a bid in the ANEL auction. In total, the lots represent 2.5 kilometers of transmission lines. The 8 lots cover, in general, the states of Minas Gerais, Bahia, Piauí, and Pará.
In 2017, the company acquired 51% of the capital from Integração Transmissora de Energia S.A. Recently, in 2018, Equatorial Energia began to control Equatorial Piauí, further increasing the company's capital and production capacity, as well as the states reached.
