Elektro operates in the distribution of electric energy in the states of São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul. It is one of the largest electric energy distributors in Brazil. The company serves 228 cities, with 223 in São Paulo and 5 in Mato Grosso do Sul, totaling over 6 million people served.
Elektro offers in-person service in 100% of the cities in its concession area and maintains a Corporate Headquarters, the Distribution Operation Center, and the Customer Relationship Center (CRC) in Campinas, São Paulo. The Distribution Center is located in Sumaré.
Iberdrola S.A. exercises indirect control over Elektro. In summary, Iberdrola is based in Spain and is a group that ranks among the largest electric companies in the world, as well as being a global leader in wind energy.
Regarding its numbers, Elektro has 12 thousand square kilometers of operational area and 115 thousand kilometers of distribution networks. Additionally, it has 2,474 kilometers of transmission lines, 154 substations, 5 mobile substations, 190 thousand distribution transformers, and 1.7 million poles.
The history of Elektro began on January 6, 1998, when it was established through the Extraordinary General Assembly of Cesp. Initially, it was a closed capital stock company.
Shortly thereafter, on January 23, 1998, through an Extraordinary General Assembly, Cesp approved the statutory change of Elektro, increasing its share capital through the transfer of assets related to the distribution of electric energy.
On June 1, 1998, Elektro began its independent commercial operations, with the simultaneous transfer of Cesp employees who worked in energy distribution to Elektro.
The following month, Elektro obtained the registration of a publicly traded company with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
In August 1998, according to the Presidential Decree, the Union granted Elektro the right to explore public services of distribution and generation of electric energy in the municipalities listed in the Concession Contract.
Subsequently, through auctions held at Bovespa, Enron came to indirectly hold 99.62% of the total share capital of Elektro, through its Brazilian holdings.
On December 2, 2001, Enron and some subsidiaries initiated a bankruptcy protection process based on Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.
The process was completed on August 31, 2004, and the indirect shareholding in Elektro was transferred to Prisma Energy International Inc. Thus, Prima Energy became directly and indirectly controlled by Enron.
Between May and September 2006, Ashmore Energy International Limited (AEI) acquired 100% of the shares of Elektro's indirect parent company, Prima Energy.
On December 29, 2006, the merger of Prisma Energy and Ashmore Energy International Limited was implemented, resulting in the company named Ashmore Energy International.
On October 22, 2007, the company's name was changed to AEI. As a result, Elektro became directly controlled by the holding companies EPC – Empresa Paranaense Comercializado, ETB – Energia Total do Brasil, AEI Investimentos Energéticos, and AEI Brazil Finance.
In 2008, the new Distribution Center of Elektro was inaugurated in the city of Sumaré, São Paulo. The company then began to operate by dividing its concession area into four major regions: west, center, south, and east.
In 2009, Elektro made significant investments in safety, productivity, quality, and innovation, especially in innovation.
For example, it innovated with the Digger Derrick equipment, which, along with the aerial basket, allows for the replacement of poles and crossarms without interrupting the power supply.
The following year, the company continued to focus on its innovation process. For instance, the company brought the hybrid aerial basket to Brazil, a piece of equipment that uses less fossil fuel and reduces carbon dioxide emissions.
In 2011, the process of selling Elektro to Iberdrola was completed. As a result, the company became part of the largest electric energy group in Spain, which is present in 40 countries and ranks among the five largest electric companies in the world.
Finally, on August 24, 2017, Elektro Holding S.A. was incorporated by Neoenergia S.A. With the incorporation, Neoenergia became a shareholder of Elektro Redes, as the universal successor of Elektro Holding, which was dissolved. Iberdrola Energia continues as the indirect controller of Elektro Redes.
