Engie Brasil Energias S.A is the largest private electricity supplier in Brazil. Looking at the ranking of the largest companies in the national segment, in the electricity sector, it is noticeable that the company only loses to the state-owned Eletrobrás.
Engie has been in the country for over 20 years. In addition, it is part of the international group Engie Energy International, listed on the Paris and Brussels stock exchanges under the ticker ENGI.
In Brazil, the company works in the production and transmission of electricity based on quality equipment and globally recognized knowledge.

The background behind Engie's origin is related to the creation of Nacional Energética by Banco Nacional in 1994. At that time, the creation of the company was linked to the completion of the Serra da Mesa Hydroelectric Plant in the Tocantins River, which was only possible through a partnership with another company, called Furnas, in 1995.
With an eye on the expansion of the Brazilian energy landscape, the Belgian company Tractebel came to Brazil. Through one of the company's branches, Tractebel Energy and Gas International arrived in 1995 to establish partnerships and take advantage of the active and promising scenario.
The first office in Brazil

One year after establishing itself in the country, Tractebel opened its first Brazilian headquarters in Rio de Janeiro in 1996. After establishing itself in Brazil, the foreign company created its first officially Brazilian brand, Tractebel Brasil Limitada, in 1997.
Despite aiming for the expansive scenario, the company declined the Brazilian financing granted by BNDES and injected a hefty $801.5 million to grow and become more competitive.
With international investments, Tractebel Brasil Ltda secured the concession for the Cana Brava Hydroelectric Plant in the Tocantins River in 1998. In the same year, the company acquired the state-owned company Gerasul.
Gerasul originated from the spin-off of Eletrobrás's generation and transmission assets, and with this leap, Tractebel secured two new plants under construction (Itá and Machadinho).
This moment is considered by many as the beginning of the format we know as Engie, as with the acquisition of Gerasul, the company began to have a future generation capacity of 3,719 MW.

After acquiring two ongoing projects, Tractebel Brasil Ltda invested to complete the unfinished Itá Hydroelectric Plant, which had started operations a few years later.
The process was successful, and the works were completed in the year 2000, ensuring a generating capacity of 1,450 MW for the company. In the same year, Tractebel Ltda signed its first free transmission contract for a free consumer through a direct sale.
The company's growth became even more evident during the so-called 'blackout' that occurred in 2001 due to a deficit in transmission lines in the country.
The Federal Government declared an energy rationing, which allowed the company to take advantage of the opportunity and put the newly acquired William Arjona Thermal Power Plant (MS) into operation.
In this sense, the company began to diversify its means of obtaining energy, adding 190 MW to Tractebel's productive capacity.

In 2002, the company grew significantly, mainly due to Brazil's need for new energy sources and transmission lines. Also in 2002, the electricity sector was marked by several auctions held that year.
Among the various auctions, Tractebel emerged victorious at the Estreito Hydroelectric Plant in Tocantins, with a capacity of 1,087 MW.
The year was also significant for the company due to the consolidation of the Cana Brava Hydroelectric Plant. Work also began on the Machadinho Hydroelectric Plant, which the company had inherited from Gerasul.
With the company already established, robust, and confident, it promoted the first electricity auction in the country in 2002.

One year after the auction, in 2003, the company joined the UN Clean Development Mechanism list. Then, in 2004, it entered the free energy supply market. The contracts totaled an average demand of 700 MW, and with the recognition, the company received two renowned certifications, ISO 9001 and 14001.
Tractebel's growth was evident; contracts had reached an average supply of 1,000 MW, and in 2005, the company went public on the Brazilian Stock Exchange. With the money from the IPO, in 2007, the company acquired Ponte de Pedra S.A, adding another hydroelectric plant to its productive capacity.
By 2008, Tractebel International changed its name to SUEZ and merged with the French state-owned Gaz de France, forming the GDF SUEZ group. That same year, the company began construction of the Ibitiúva Thermal Power Plant, entering the biomass segment.

With the entry of the English company International Power, GDF SUEZ began to adopt a strong brand in 2016. The process resulted in a rebranding, transforming our beloved company into Engie Brasil Energias S.A.
Subsequently, Engie Brasil began to diversify in the wind segment and entered the photovoltaic market. As a result, TBLE3 became EGIE3, consolidating the already existing name internationally in Brazil.
The installation in the photovoltaic market occurred in the same year, with Engie's entry into the Distributed Photovoltaic Generation niche. Additionally, in 2017, the company entered the so-called Energy Retail, consistently increasing its profits.
From this point on, Engie also began its entry into the transmission line segment, acquiring 1,000 KM of lines in Paraná through the winning bid of lot one of the transmission auction No. 2017 held by Aneel.

The growth of Engie that we know does not stop here. Recently, in 2018, the company acquired GV Energy, considered a leader in the energy and gas management market.
Thus, through the acquisition of ACS still in 2018, Engie stamped its passport in the energy monitoring niche. The year 2018 was marked by various acquisitions, and the company also secured Sadenco – a leader in the public lighting segment.

Last year, another significant step was taken in the company's expansive process, which did its homework by establishing itself in the gas market through the acquisition of TAG (which we mentioned at the beginning of this article).
Now, more than ever, Engie emphasizes the word diversification in energy supply, offering services in sectors such as:
photovoltaic;
gas;
wind;
hydroelectric;
biomass;
thermal.
