BTG Pactual Bank was founded in 1983 in Rio de Janeiro by André Jakurski, Paulo Guedes, and Luiz Cezar Fernandes. At the time, the trio of entrepreneurs wanted to establish a business that was different from other companies in the same segment, thus founding a company based on partnership management, meritocracy, and entrepreneurship.
In 1998, the bank underwent a change in its corporate structure, where new members were added to the companies and the old executives and directors were replaced. Thus, a new team of executives became part of the financial institution, with André Esteves, Eduardo Plass, Marcelo Serfaty, and Gilberto Sayão as executives of the company.

With the change in the company's management, the bank's strategy also needed to be altered. In this regard, the company began to expand its business portfolio, paving the way for new ventures.
In 2006, a Swiss bank acquired the company, changing its corporate name to UBS Pactual. Two years later, in 2008, André Esteves left UBS to start his own business. The executive, along with other investors, created BTG Investments, and in 2009, the company purchased UBS Pactual.
In 2010, with the help of Sovereign Wealth funds, the company managed to raise resources to expand business development. Through a consortium of international investors, the bank raised a total of USD 1.8 billion for investments.
The following year, BTG Investments acquired part of the management of Banco Panamericano and, in the same year, purchased Brazilian Finance & Real Estate. In 2012, the company went public on the Brazilian Stock Exchange, in addition to strengthening its activities in the Latin market by acquiring Celfin Capital (Chilean bank) and Bolsa y Renta (Colombian brokerage).

In 2014, the bank expanded its international business by purchasing two companies in Europe: Ariel Re (British reinsurer) and BSI (Swiss Bank). Currently, BTG Pactual is managed by Roberto Sallouti.
