São Martinho S.A. is a company in the sugar-energy sector, that is, specialized in energy production from sugarcane. In total, the company has a milling capacity of approximately 24 million tons of sugarcane, with an agricultural area of 300 thousand hectares. Additionally, the company has a storage capacity of 820 thousand tons of sugar and 700 thousand m³ of ethanol.
Due to its production capacity, São Martinho is classified as one of the largest companies in the sugar-energy sector in the country. In general, the company operates with four units, namely, the Usina São Martinho, located in the Ribeirão Preto region (SP); Usina Boa Vista, in Quirinópolis (GO); Usina Iracema, in the Limeira region (SP), and Usina Santa Cruz, located in the municipality of Américo Brasiliense, in SP.
Production is focused on sugar and ethanol, where the São Martinho, Iracema, and Santa Cruz mills are responsible for producing both products, while the Usina Boa Vista specializes only in ethanol production. The main production method is the burning of sugarcane bagasse, which allows the company to maintain self-sufficiency and, in case of surpluses, São Martinho conducts sales.
One of São Martinho's main differentiators is its logistics platform for product distribution. This is because the company has high storage capacity and benefits from the proximity to important railways and highways for commercialization. Additionally, the production is distributed in real-time, and the company has its own railway branch.
The history of São Martinho began with the dream of the Italian Ometto family, who came to Brazil in search of better living conditions at the end of the 19th century. The initial idea was to build something where the family could establish itself. Thus, the Italian family settled in the interior of São Paulo, where they began to pave a path that would later become very successful.
The first sugarcane mill was set up in 1914 at the Olaria site. The family's sugarcane production occurred for the first time in 1932 at the Fazenda Boa Vista, in the Limeira region. Soon after, in 1937, the Ometto family built the first alcohol distillery by purchasing the Usina Iracema in Iracemápolis (SP).
In addition to alcohol production, the mill also began producing sugar in 1946. The Usina São Martinho, located in the city of Pradópolis (SP), was acquired in 1949 and quickly became one of the largest sugarcane processors in the world.
Both mills grew exponentially throughout history, as well as modernized with production processes aimed at obtaining sugar and ethanol. Furthermore, São Martinho developed a unified structure to make production more professional and modern.
