Sabesp is one of the main publicly traded and mixed economy companies in Brazil. Responsible for providing water, sewage collection, and treatment for 373 municipalities in São Paulo, the company serves over 28.2 million people in water supply and approximately 24.6 million households with sewage collection.

Due to the coverage of municipalities, Sabesp receives about 30% of the resources allocated for basic sanitation in the country. Furthermore, the company is considered one of the largest in the world in its sector.
In addition to the 373 municipalities where the company provides services, Sabesp also operates in four more regions – Mogi-Mirim, Castilho, Mairinque, and Andradina – with the assistance of private companies in the sector.
The history of Sabesp began on November 1, 1973, after the merger of 6 companies from the state of São Paulo: Comasp, Sanesp, SAEC, FESB, SBS, and Sanevale. Initially, the foundation of the company aimed to implement the guidelines of the PLANASA, the National Sanitation Plan established by the Brazilian government.

After its foundation, several other public companies linked to the water supply and sewage treatment sector were incorporated into Sabesp. At that time, during the 1980s, the company was already conducting sewage collection and treatment work in the municipalities of São Paulo.
As part of its work, in 1985, Sabesp completed the Fluoridation Program in Greater São Paulo, benefiting a total of 13 million people. Additionally, in 1992, the company developed projects aimed at the decontamination of the Tietê River, as well as the recovery of the Guarapiranga Reservoir.
