Gerdau is a company whose main activity is the production and commercialization of steel products in general, with plants present in more than 8 countries. This structure makes the company occupy the leadership in the long steel segment in the Americas, in addition to establishing itself as one of the main suppliers of special steels for the automotive sector globally.

The company's diversified portfolio includes various items, depending on the demand of each client. Such items include:
The company's history began in 1901, when João Gerdau and his son Hugo laid the foundations of Gerdau with the newly created Nail Factory Pontas de Paris in Porto Alegre-RS.
Over time, João began to grow older and shortly before his passing on November 24, 1917, the business was managed by his son Hugo Gerdau.

Thanks to the abundant production of nails, Rio Grande do Sul ceased to depend on imports. It was in 1933 that the nail factory further expanded production with the construction of a new unit in the city of Passo Fundo in the interior of the state.
In 1946, Hugo Gerdau's son-in-law, Curt Johannpeter, took over the company's direction and led a decisive phase of business expansion. Just two years after his entry, the Hugo Gerdau Nail Factory, successor to the Pontas de Paris nail factory, acquired the Siderurgica Riograndense, and began its successful trajectory in the steel industry.

The year 1948 is marked by the start of steel manufacturing operations in Porto Alegre. Thus, the second steel production plant began operations as early as 1957. With a new look, the Company had Germano, Klaus, and Jorge Gerdau Johannpeter in leadership positions a few years later.

After years of expansion, Gerdau reached the end of the 1960s with the initiative to produce steel in the Northeast and Southeast regions of Brazil. In addition, it began to enter the steel distribution segment. As a result, the company's internationalization process began to take shape in 1980.

Thus, it managed to enter the North American market by the end of 1989. More than that, it was able to acquire part of the share capital of an important rolling mill in Argentina in 1998.
As a result of this international success, the Company's shares began to be traded on the North American stock exchange in 1999.

In 2004, Gerdau began steel production in Colombia. Just five years later, it started producing its own raw material: iron ore.
In 2013, the company began producing flat steels and in 2016 it expanded its product portfolio with the production of heavy plates at the Ouro Branco plant.
More recently, in 2018, Gustavo Werneck took over as the new CEO of Gerdau. The members of the Gerdau Johannpeter family began to dedicate themselves exclusively to the boards of directors.
