The National Steel Company is a publicly traded multinational, operating in the sectors of energy, logistics, steelmaking, cement, and mining. In addition, all production stages of steel, from iron ore extraction to the commercialization of a diverse range of steel products, are part of the company's production process.

Due to the integrated production system, the company offers low production costs, combined with quality management. The company's main product, steel, is present in the various segments that the company operates:
Construction;
Automotive sector;
Packaging;
White goods;
The history of the National Steel Company began in 1941, after the then president of Brazil, Getúlio Vargas, founded the state-owned company during his government. A few years after its founding, in 1946, the company's first plant was inaugurated and, in honor of the president, it was named Presidente Vargas Plant.

During the 1960s and 1980s, the company began the process of expanding production, where it increased, in 1989, the installed capacity to 4.6 thousand tons. Shortly after, in 1993, the government divested 91% of the shares it held in the company, after the Company was sold in auctions on the Stock Exchange in Rio de Janeiro.
By 1996, as part of the production expansion process, the Company acquired stakes in the Port of Itaguaí (RJ) and MRS Railway. One year later, in 1997, the company's shares began to be traded on Level II of the Nyse, New York Stock Exchange.
In 1998, the distribution of steel within the company was intensified with the acquisition of two large companies in the sector, INAL and Intermesa. The process of internationalization of CSN began in 2001, when the company acquired assets from Heartland Steel in the United States.

After five years, it was CSN's turn to acquire 100% of Lusodier in Portugal. By 2013, the Company completed the acquisition of the German steel company StahlwerkThüringen GmbH SWT.
Recently, in 2019, the companies Vicunha Aços S.A and Rio laco became the main controllers of the CSN Group, with 48.97% and 4.19% of the shares, respectively. The remaining shares, about 20%, were held by the New York Stock Exchange, with 0.53% in treasury and 25% in free float.
