Founded in 2001, Biomm is a biopharmaceutical company, considered one of the leading Brazilian biotechnology companies. In addition, Biomm has more than 20 patents and significant international experience.
The foundation of the company occurred from the partial spin-off of Biobrás, which at the time, in 2001, was considered the largest national producer of insulin and the fourth largest producer worldwide. Today, Biomm has an experienced technical team and is a pioneer in Brazil in pharmaceutical biotechnology.
Recently, Biomm resumed national insulin production with the installation of a new industrial unit in the state of Minas Gerais, located in the city of Nova Lima. The new unit, in addition to producing insulin, will also focus on the production of other types of biopharmaceutical products.
Headquartered in Belo Horizonte, Biomm is the only company in the biopharmaceutical segment listed on the Brazilian Stock Exchange.
The history of Biomm began with Biobrás, a pioneering company in Brazil in pharmaceutical biotechnology. Biobrás was founded in the 1970s by entrepreneurs who invested in the production of biological substances, such as those extracted from animal and plant tissues. The purpose of this extraction was to supply substances to pharmaceutical, food, and textile industries.
In the late 1970s, the company established a joint venture that at the time was classified as one of the leading global producers of insulin. The joint venture, in this case, was founded to serve as a local producer of animal insulins.
In the 1980s and 1990s, the company fully acquired control of the joint venture and, from that point on, began to develop its own technology for the production of recombinant human insulin, as well as its intellectual property.
At that time, the company was one of the few Brazilian companies exporting pharmaceutical products to various countries in Europe, the Americas, and Asia.
In 2001, the spin-off of Biobrás occurred, leading to the creation of Biomm, which came to hold the main researchers, the patents for the insulin production process, the complete know-how for insulin production and other biopharmaceuticals, and the key executives of the business.
With the creation of Biomm, the entire market strategy of the company was directed towards technological development, restructuring for a return to the market, as well as licensing its technology.
By 2012, the company became part of the Bovespa+ segment, the highest level of corporate governance on the Stock Exchange. In 2013, the capitalization process for the construction of the factory in Nova Lima, Minas Gerais, was completed.
