Sendas Distribuidora S.A., also known as Assaí Atacadista, is a Brazilian company that was founded in 1974, with its first store in the city of São Paulo. It currently operates in the wholesale self-service sector, offering more than seven thousand grocery, food, perishables, packaging, bazaar, hygiene, beverage, and cleaning products.
After a long period of brand expansion, in 2007 Assaí became part of Grupo Pão de Açúcar (GPA), which enabled a leveraging of the brand and the evolution from 14 stores to 195, directly generating more than 40 thousand jobs.
The group's objective is to serve as a support point for entrepreneurs who need to make daily stock replenishments, with advantages and conditions suitable for each type of business. In this sense, Assaí is present in 22 states and the Federal District and has plans to extend its presence in other parts of Brazil.
Currently, there are about 195 stores spread across Brazil, with more than 50 thousand employees and 30 million customers per month. The store expansion plan, which included 9 openings in 2017 (in just 35 days) across 6 states and another 18 stores opened in 2018, continues to be in full swing today.
The history of Sendas Distribuidora S.A., also known as Assaí Atacadista, began in 1974 when its first store was inaugurated in São Paulo. This initial phase of the company focused on meeting the supply needs of small wholesalers.
After a period of expansion, in 2007 the company became part of GPA, a company of Grupo Casino. From this partnership, the growth of Assaí Atacadista was boosted, causing the brand to grow from 14 to 195 stores and directly responsible for generating more than 40 thousand jobs.
In 2017, Sendas Distribuidora S.A., through Assaí Atacadista, achieved a record expansion, totaling 9 stores opened in just 35 days. Thus, stores were inaugurated in the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Bahia, Pará, Rio de Janeiro, and Piauí.
In the following year, the expansion project was responsible for opening 18 new stores, directly generating 5 thousand direct jobs. Currently, the Assaí group is present in 22 states of Brazil, plus the Federal District.
In 2021, the split between GPA and Assaí occurred, causing each to take different paths. However, the new scenario allowed for Assaí's listing on the Stock Exchange in March of this year. The entry into B3 enabled the company's shares to appreciate by about 400%.
